The following day, surprise greeted me as Wyatt sat on the edge of my bed. His orange eyes latched onto me as if he were waiting for some miracle to happen.

“Why, good morning, beautiful.” He patted my leg. “I thought I would let you sleep before dragging you for a walk around the yard, as per Kane’s request.”

I sat up, rubbing my temples. The pounding was stronger than ever today. “I don’t want to walk. I just want to relax.”

His laughter filled the room. “Trust me. I don’t want to work any more than you do. He needs to see we are at least trying to make an effort to be seen in the open.” Wyatt turned away from where I now stood so I could put the dress he threw at me on.

“Why are you here?” I asked as I zipped up the yellow dress.

He turned, knowing that I was now fully clothed. “Well, isn’t it obvious?” he asked me, and as I was shrugging, he went on. “I am part of Kane’s top men, and I am now your guard.”

“No. I mean, why are you here? In my room?”

Wyatt opened the door to the hallway and gestured for me to exit. “Right. I am here to occupy your time while the King has business to attend to.”

As we walked around the grounds, the sun was burning hot on my skin, and with one glance, Wyatt could tell I was getting uncomfortable. He pulled me into the shade and sat me down on the ground.

“Take a break. I forgot you don’t know how evil the sun can be.” He flopped down next to me, perching one arm across a knee.

Kane walked across the yard with Darla as he waved towards me. I sat up to wave back at the same time Wyatt shifted away from me.

“What?” I asked as I turned my attention back to him.

“Well, he just has his worries that some handsome man will get close to you and there will be another scandal, like with the Lycan Prince.”

I felt my cheeks burn red. “What? There was no scandal with Axel and me.”

“But that’s not what his guards say happened in the hallway.” Wyatt raised one eyebrow as he glanced at me.

“I had to do that.” I picked at the grass that was below my hands. “Besides, I didn’t think I was your type.”

Wyatt’s hand pushed the hair out of my eyes. “My goddess, everyone is my type.”

I bit my lip. “I pictured you liking blondes or vampires.”

“Those are nice types, but yes, you are my type, so are the kings and especially the Lycan Prince.”

I tilted my head back and let out a laugh because who didn’t have an attraction to the Prince? “Well, I think I can get you close to Axel, but I don’t know if you are his type.”

Wyatt left out a heavy sigh. “I never am.”

“At least we have that in common.” I lay back in the grass, looking up at the sky through the leaves of the tree, feeling at ease.
